Sell like a pro

  1. Look up what an item actually sold for (NiaMeowDB's price check) before you list it.
  2. Price at or just under the sold price. Listings sit about 40% above what really sells.
  3. Sell where buyers already are: potions at dungeon entrances, coconuts at Florina Beach.
  4. Only trade inside the trade window, and never buy mesos for real money.

How the Free Market works

11 roomsFree Market 1-11
No searchBuyers walk the rooms
12-18 itemsPer shop, by permit
โ‰ˆ 15Mesos per NX (Oct 20)
  • The entrance has portals from Perion and Henesys Market (per the Classic Wiki; check in game).
  • Room 1 fills first and has the pricey stuff. Rooms 1-6 are a grassy hall; 7-11 are a cave.
  • There's no search or auction house. Shops spill into every channel, so tell people your channel and room when you megaphone.
  • Return Scrolls, teleport rocks and Mystic Door don't work inside, and there are no monsters.

A Regular permit costs about 22,000 mesos worth of NX at ~15 mesos per NX.

  • You have to stay online. Hired Merchants (offline shops) aren't sold yet.
  • You can open a shop in the Free Market or out in the field.
  • If a monster hits you, your shop closes. Pick a quiet, monster-free spot.
  • Since Oct 15, unsold items go straight back to your inventory when you close.

Scams to dodge

The switcheroo

The item gets swapped for a look-alike right before you accept. Re-check every slot after any change.

"You go first"

Never hand over mesos or items outside the trade window. Outside the window you have no protection.

Wrong scroll tier

Greater sounds better than Intermediate, but it's the 10% gamble. Read the % before you pay.

Scrolled vs clean

Same name, different stats. Check slots and stats on gear before you buy.

Too-good megaphones

Rushed "quitting, everything cheap" deals and meso ads. If it's urgent, it's a trap.

Fake GMs and "free NX"

GMs never ask for your login. Only log in through Nexon or Steam.

Tradeable once

Many Cash items can only be traded once. If you buy one, you can't resell it.

Bots, reports and bans

Where they hang out: Henesys Hunting Ground (warriors basic-attacking on every channel), the Slime Tree in Ellinia and the Kerning subway.

How to spot one:

  • Random letter-and-number names
  • A starter weapon at a high level
  • The same attack rhythm with no monsters around
  • Two characters copying each other's moves

Report it: Right-click the character and pick Report. Some players think there's a daily cap of about 15 reports; Nexon hasn't said.

Don't buy mesos. Nexon banned 1,379 accounts in the first days of Founder's Access and 3,121 by Oct 14. Real-money trading is a ban reason, and a ban covers your main MapleStory account too.

Turning NX into mesos

  • Cash Shop items are the main way NX turns into mesos. The rate went from under 2 mesos per NX on Oct 7 to about 15 on Oct 20.
  • Equipping a Cash item makes it untradeable. Sell before you try it on.
  • Coming soon: after an account's first NX purchase, its Cash items can't be gifted or sold for 48 hours.
  • Nobody has published a trade tax for Classic. If you see a % quoted, it's a guess.

FAQ

How do I open a shop in MapleStory Classic?

Buy a store permit in the Cash Shop (Regular is 1,500 NX for 90 days and 12 items), then open it in the Free Market or in a field. Stay online: Hired Merchants aren't sold yet, and a monster hit closes your shop.

Where is the Free Market?

The Free Market Entrance has portals from Perion and Henesys Market and leads to 11 rooms. Leaving takes you back to the town you came from.

How do I price items?

Use the price someone actually paid, not other listings. Listings run about 40% above sale prices, so pricing at the sold median sells fast.

Is there a trade tax?

Nobody has published one for Classic.

Can I get banned for buying mesos?

Yes. Nexon bans real-money trading, and the ban covers your main MapleStory account too.
